Bring on the New Year with Villa Sandi Prosecco

Happy New Year and Buon Anno Nuovo!  If you believe in new years resolutions I wish you much success in sticking with the plan, myself included.  I hope to blog more in 2023 and share a variety of wines, wine and food pairings and some interviews here and there with monthly themes on particular regions traveling from southern to northern Italy.  I'm starting off the 2023 New Year sharing with you Prosecco from Villa Sandi in the Veneto wine region of northeastern Italy.  They're located in Crocetta del Montello in the Treviso province.

The winery is based in a Palladian style villa from 1622, which was bought at the end of the 1970's to be restored.  Today the winery is run by the 4th generation family members, but the vineyards were purchased with plantings originating in the 1920's with the grandfather, Mario Polegato, of the current President Giancarlo.

Villa Sandi is one of the pioneers of the early 1980's to make Prosecco more known by exporting it around the world.  They have 5 estates located between the Veneto and the Friuli Venezia Giulia regions with the following estates: Spilimbergo, Crocetta del Montello, Nervesa della Battaglia, Valdobbiadene and La Rivetta.

Like many wineries thankfully today are practicing sustainability, Villa Sandi has a hydroelectric power plant on sight with water that comes from the Brentella Canal that they also use to irrigate their vineyards.  Along with that the winery uses solar panels for electricity generation.

I can't speak to some of Villa Sandi's higher end Prosecco as opposed to these every day Prosecco I tried, but for the value it's worth a try.

Villa Sandi Prosecco and Rose Prosecco

The Villa Sandi Il Fresco Rose Treviso DOC was lightly pink colored with fruity aromas of fresh strawberries.  Dry and crisp that brightens up the palate with tart strawberries.  This non-vintage is made of 90% Glera and 10% Pinot Noir. The whole grapes are pressed lightly with the Pinot Noir grapes lightly macerated to extract color and tannin.  The white juice with some of the red juice is blended before yeasts are added.  Fermentation is stopped once the alcohol and sugar levels are reached.  The wine spends 2 months on the lees before bottled.  ABV 11.5% SRP $13.  I the last year or two I have really enjoyed the Prosecco rose as I like the red fruit nuances.  It's all about personal preference.

The Villa Sandi Il Fresco Brut Prosecco Treviso DOC non-vintage is made of 85% Glera and 15% Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.  Wines that are labeled under the Treviso DOC must be harvested, produced and bottled in the Treviso province.  Produced in the same way as the Rose.  Pale straw colored wiht nice aromas of apple, pears and citrus.  Dry and refreshing on the palate with citrus flavors.  A perfect apertif.  ABV 11% SRP $19

I'll be focusing on Sicily for January all month so stay tuned!  Here's to a healthy and prosperous new year!  Thanks for joining me in my 10th year of blogging!
